Who should I read with?

The Word One to One works best when reading with someone you are acquainted with. You don’t have to be best friends – if it would be natural for you to share a coffee with that person, you can offer to have a look at the books or download the app.

We normally advise people don’t read with those of the opposite sex or people they may be sexually attracted to. It is also good to be aware of your church’s safeguarding policy and to tell leaders in your church family who you are reading with so they can support you with prayer and advice.

Where should we meet?

You can meet anywhere that is convenient to you both: a home, a café, a park, your workplace, school, university, online - wherever works for you. The key is simply to ensure that you’re comfortable, that you have a little bit of privacy so you can talk openly, and that the time and place suits your friend.

How long does an episode take?

On average, it takes 30 minutes to work through an episode, but that would depend on your personalities. Be relaxed about finding a pace that works for you and your friend.

How long does it take to go through a series?

This depends on how frequently you meet and how quickly you work through the episodes. Some people complete it within three months. Others can only catch up with their friends occasionally and it takes more than a year.

Once you finish reading through the John series, the Acts series is a great next step!

Should my reading partner prepare by reading ahead?

No, there is no need for them to prepare. We often find that the Christian friend helps the verses come to life because they can chat through them with excitement and also occasionally explain how the truths they point to have impacted their own lives.

Should I give my reading partner the books to keep?

Yes. What a gift! As you read through John’s Gospel you will give them 11 presents each packed with truths about the Jesus Christ.

Should I only meet one to one?

No – many people use the resources in small groups, both online and in person.

How long do I keep reading?

As you read through The Word One to One, it is worth finding a Christianity Explored course (for example) to attend, or to get into the habit of meeting with church family. By doing so, you will encounter Jesus not only in the pages of Scripture, but in the love that He gives through His people.
